The best themes to play with
In charades, the word list IS the game. The same mechanic is a bore with the wrong words and a show with the right ones. Here is how we pick a theme depending on the group.
Classics: the starting point
Animals and movies always work: everyone can act a penguin and everyone has seen Titanic. If someone in the group has never played, start here: early wins get people hooked.
Viral: for very online groups
Acting out "ghosting", "unboxing" or "a TikTok dance" is nothing like acting out "elephant": these are concepts, not things, and that is exactly the fun. For a group that lives on the internet, the viral deck gets the most laughs per minute.
Country decks: the secret weapon
Country decks (Spain, Mexico, USA) are made of shared culture: siesta, tacos al pastor, Black Friday. With a group from the same place, every word is an inside nod; in a mixed group, watching someone act out a custom they have never heard of is even better.
Your own list: the best game you will ever play
No deck competes with a list your group wrote itself: the nicknames, the stories from the last trip, the sentence someone has not lived down since 2019. It takes a minute to create inside the game, one word per line, and it guarantees the best round of the night. Publishing lists for everyone to play is coming soon.
Golden rule
When in doubt, pick concrete, actable words: "flamingo" over "melancholy". Abstract concepts are for seasoned groups who want the difficulty up.
